A lot of people who think about becoming a model generally believe that this industry is strictly built for women, but that is far from the truth. Male models are just as important in the modeling industry and getting started in it is not as difficult as some might think. So if you have the drive and determination to become a male model just check out a few of the tips and pointers listed below that will help get your modeling career started today.
Requirements for Male Models
One of the major benefits of getting into modeling as a man is that the height and body type requirements are more relaxed. That is not to say that anyone can become a successful model in this business, as there are still standards for each part of the industry. Whether you’re looking to move into fashion modeling, fitness modeling jobs or even modeling for young boys you’re going to need to meet certain requirements, such as:
- Be between 5’11 and 6’2″ for adult males
- Have measurements of 40 regular to 42 long
- No excessive hair on your body
Other things such as weight and body mass could make you more ideal for other types of jobs and projects, but these are the standards most male modeling jobs that guys must meet. Based off of your measurable, age, and other qualities you will then be able to decide on the type of modeling you would like to do.
Choose a Type of Modeling
The modeling industry is made up of several different parts that vary in difficulty, experience needed, and of course pay as well. Now, once you know that you meet the standard requirements of being a male model you’ll then have to determine which avenue best suits you and your experience. For men and women, the ideal choice is modeling in the high fashion industry, because it brings the most exposure and financial gain. Unfortunately, it’s also the most difficult to break into due to the high level of experience required in this field. Luckily, this is not the only modeling career that you can choose to pursue as men who model can also go into:
- Fitness modeling
- Promotional modeling
- Glamour modeling
- Specialty/Body Part modeling
Another popular choice that guys make when they start modeling is commercial/print modeling, which is much easier to get started in. This type of modeling allows you gather plenty of early experience in this business while being featured on billboards, magazines, newspapers, and other print ads. As you gather experience you’ll be able to build a portfolio and work towards signing with an actual model agency.
Networking and Signing with an Agent
The next step of getting into the male modeling industry is about largely focused on networking and signing with a model agency if possible. We say “if possible” because while anybody can become a model, it’s not always easy to find an agency that is willing to sign you. In most cases an actual agency will need you to meet the standard requirements for a male model, while also proving that you have the look and experience to compete with their current models that are being represented.
That doesn’t mean that it’s impossible to get signed, but it’s not as easy as some people make it out to be. Fortunately, there are other plenty of companies and brands who conduct a model search and will enlist the service of a talent listing service. These places can help you stay up to date on new casting calls for models across the country, and will usually submit your name to the casting directors. This opens doors to new job opportunities and the ability to network with people within the industry.
Once you get a foot in the door of this business the rest of your success will be based on your drive and determination. Those who pursue their dreams the hardest and work to develop their modeling skills are the ones who find success, and that person could be you.
